The Summit Times

I do a newspaper class with my oldest class - usually we read and discuss various English-language news articles, but for the last couple weeks we have been writing our own newspaper, which I put together last night.

I thought some of you may be interested in reading it, so you can download as PDF. Keep in mind that these kids are in Grade 7, that English is their second language, and that this is only one of several schools they attend, and be amazed.

  1. I am amazed - they seem to have an excellent command of the English language. How much editing do you do?

  2. I did a fair bit of editing, but most of my editing wasn't actually grammar, but rather changing the articles slightly to make more sense. So, I changed some details in one story to make it true and I wrote an opening paragraph for another to introduce the story. Other than that, I only made minor changes.

  3. What impressive writing. One article from each member of the class I'm guessing with 4 girls and 3 boys contributing. And I bet they chose their own subjects revealing a bit about themselves. Way to go teacher!! I guess you're not 'Mr Steve teacher' to these - are they 13 year olds? What do they call you?

  4. These ones mainly call me Mr. McCarthy. :-)

And thanks! I was impressed by their writing too, though often when I am responsible for correcting the grammar I am less impressed.
